They are getting King Longs as their new buses as the company is 51% owned by them now Tate's is now Chinese owned??? No there is a dealership in the UK, they own it. It is something to do with the manager been close to someone at King Long.

No King Long own it & King Long own 51% of Tates. China aren't going to own tates so it's the UK dealers that own it.

Surely.
King Long UK dealership is owned 51% by KL, 49% by a private party (PP1) PP1 owns 51% of Tates travel, 49% is owned by other private parties (pp2).
I can't see what KL want with Tates or any bus/coach operator.
Edit: Looking at Tates Travel Limited, they have 2 shares issued, so the 51/49 split is highly unlikely.
I'd download the annual return for Tates but I can't be bothered wasting £1.

No King Long own it & King Long own 51% of Tates. China aren't going to own tates so it's the UK dealers that own it. Wrong. The King Long dealership in the UK only (King Long Direct Ltd) is owned by Island Fortitude Inc, a company based in the Caribbean. Island Fortitude own other bus companies in the UK (either in full or in part) including Bakers, Jeff's and Silcox of Pembroke Dock. Island Fortitude are currently in the process of buying a 51% stake in Tates. At present there are 2 shareholders in Tates, the founder Mr Mallinson and his son in law Mr Woolley. So it will be Island Fortitude who own the majority of Tate's. They also own the King Long dealer in the UK but it is wrong to say King Long own Tates.

Business people don't half know how to complicate things so I can see why people may think King Long own Tates.

Cringe. (Couldn't find a smiley that gave it justice but thats how I felt)Just because they have 'rich' owners (not Chinese may I add), doesn't mean they'll be throwing money about and have money to burn. I imagine it'll remain a sensibly run business picking up tenders on a similar basis that it has been over the past few years and slowly growing. Oh and Mr Mallinson & his S.I.L should still retain 49% of the shareholding once the Island Fortitude Inc purchase occurs.

If anything it makes it less likely that competition will expand, Arriva are an important customer of King Long having supplied the fleet to Malta and the UK dealer will want (and has been trying) to expand that into the UK so would be unlikely to encourage overly aggressive actions against any neighbouring operators. Bringing in an outside investor is always likely to reduce the more aggressive tendencies as unless you are taking on a real basket case it will always be harder to carve enough of a market to make you money than it is to serve an established market or get your sums right and gain the steady income of a contract - an investor would expect to see a better return than someone running their own business as, so long as you can earn enough to live on, many are happy running the routes they want to run despite very poor returns on a lot.

Don't forget who owns Arriva, Deutsche Bahn who describes itself as the second-largest transport company in the world, after Deutsche Post AG, and is the largest railway operator and infrastructure owner in Europe. It carries about two billion passengers each year, i.e. and not someone who King Long would want to irritate let alone take on!
