Now that building of the line to the Airport has been completed, testing is due to start tomorrow. The line is due to open for service by December, so just over a year early! I plan to ride the Airport and Rochdale via Oldham Central sections for the first time in December. I am already looking forward to Christmas as a result!
The Airport service will work as a shuttle to/ from Cornbrook initially, then eventually extend via the 2nd city crossing, I think as far as Shaw. It is a pity that this service will not operate to town yet, as the East Didsbury service may have been more appropriate as a shuttle with so many other buses and trains available. However, I think this decision is to discourage air passengers from using Metrolink, in favour of faster and more direct trains.

The Airport line will open in 3 weeks time on Monday 3 November 2014, which is impressive news given that the line was originally scheduled to open in 2016. Trams will initially run every 12 mins between Cornbrook and the Airport calling at Chorlton and Wythenshawe, which will see a new bus interchange opening in the near future. This will mean a 6 minute service between Cornbrook and St Werburgh's Road. The service will extend further into the city centre once the second city crossing line is completed in 2017. www.tfgm.com/Corporate/media_centre/Pages/News.aspx?articleId=545

I'm impressed by the line opening this soon, I haven't been to wythenshawe and Manchester airport direction for a few years. I have yet to ride the tram to east didsbury.

After the delays to the openings of the previous new lines (South Manchester to St Werburgh's Road section, Oldham/Rochdale and East Manchester), Metrolink and TfGM are definitely pleased with themselves getting the Airport line and the St Werburgh's Road-East Didsbury sections opened earlier than estimated.
It does mean that the only major work that is now going on for Metrolink is the 2CC (2nd City Crossing) section. Preparation work is going on along Cross Street/Corporation Street, the work to move the Cenotaph is well on the way to completion, while an extra platform and turnback options at Deansgate-Castlefield are being put in place.
Metrolink should hopefully see more expansion work in future, if the Trafford Centre line gets the required funding.

Yep, trial period for concessionary passes now over, so all concessionary passes are now using the smart machines for Get Me There. The machines should be available for all Metrolink passengers early next year. Passengers would be required to 'touch in' at their starting point and 'touch out' at their destination. Contactless card payments should also be used in the future, while Get Me There should be available on buses and trains from 2016 at the earliest. www.getmethere.com/web/tfgm_customer/home

Significant changes to services from the end of the month due to the closure of St Peter's Square stop, as part of preparation for the second city crossing. From 29 June for 8 weeks, the stop will be closed and no services will run through the stop. Services from Altrincham and East Didsbury will terminate at Deansgate-Castlefield, as will trams from Eccles, which will also run via MediaCityUK. A peak-time service will also run from Altrincham to Cornbrook. Services from Bury will terminate at Piccadilly station, while trams from Rochdale & Oldham will run to Piccadilly before continuing to Ashton-under-Lyne. Airport trams remain unchanged. Services as follows: - Altrincham to Deansgate-Castlefield: 12 minute service with double trams.
- Altrincham to Cornbrook: Peak only 12 minute service with single trams.
- Bury to Piccadilly: 6 minute service (7am to 8pm Mon-Fri, 9am – 8pm Sat) and 12 minutes at all other times. Some double trams will run during weekday peak.
- East Didsbury to Deansgate-Castlefield: 12 minute service with double trams in the peak.
- Eccles to Deansgate-Castlefield via MediaCityUK: 12 minute service with double trams.
- Manchester Airport to Cornbrook: 12 minute service with single trams.
- Rochdale town centre to Ashton-under-Lyne: 12 minute service with single trams.
Services will change again after the 8 weeks (approx late-August/early September) with services running through St Peter's Square but not calling at the stop. During the 8 weeks, a shuttle bus service will run between Piccadilly, Cornbrook and Trafford Bar, numbered X1, running between 0600 and 2000 weekdays and 0700 and 1900 weekends, running every 10 minutes (5 mins at peak times). There will also be changes to the Metroshuttle services from the same time to assist passengers making their way across the city centre. Metroshuttle 1 will run an clockwise circular from Piccadilly station via Portland Street, Peter Street, Deansgate, Victoria station, High Street (for Shudehill Interchange), Church Street and Dale Street to Piccadilly station. Metroshuttle 2 will run between Shudehill and Piccadilly in both directions via Victoria station, Deansgate, Spinningfields, Deansgate-Castlefield station, Whitworth Street West (for Oxford Road station) and Whitworth Street. Metroshuttle 3 will run as an enhanced 2 service, running between Piccadilly and Spinningfields via Whitworth Street, MMU and Deansgate. www.tfgm.com/Corporate/media_centre/Pages/News.aspx?articleId=709www.tfgm.com/Corporate/media_centre/Pages/News.aspx?articleId=708www.tfgm.com/buses/Pages/Metroshuttle-280615.aspxwww.tfgm.com/Corporate/media_centre/Pages/News.aspx?articleId=708www.tfgm.com/buses/Pages/Metroshuttle-280615.aspx

Does anyone know who is operating the X1, X2 and X3 tram replacement services in Manchester? Stagecoach Manchester are operating the services, using Magic Bus vehicles displaced from the 141, which has finished for the summer, and the 142/143, which has reduced services over the summer.

Thanks SF07, might be worth a trip over to Manchester to sample these then although not as interesting as it would have been a few years ago, I presume most of these are Enviro 400's now. At least there should be some unusual photo opportunities.
