Brilliant buses they were. Howcome today many Plaxton Paramounts are still on the road ? Good bodywork or good strong Volvo/Leyland engines ?

You might be right there. The predecessor to today's X52 (Harrogate - Ilkley) was branded Ebor Link or Ebor Express or something using dark blue Plaxton Paramounts The Ebor Link was Harrogate-York, it then became the X50 York-Skipton via Harrogate, Otley and Ikley which was then gradually cut back (IIRC the Skipton-Harrogate section ended up with more buses per day than the York-Harrogate bit). The service was finally withdrawn to allow the freed resources to increase the frequency of 36 from 30 mins to 20 mins.
