As, ive previously stated i know very little about buses compared to most of you on this forum, but how come the Spectra with its DAF DB250 engine can be so economical compared to the ALX300 which AY run which with the DAF SB220 is intrinsically the same engine, albeit with slightly less horse-power. On a power to weight ratio, im sure theyre would be very little between them, or have i missed something here?. probably the gearbox. the spectra (step entrance) has a 4 speed where as the alx300s have a 3 speed. voith that is. The earlier examples of the ALX300's have 4 speed ZF Gearboxes not Voith

HJC's Deckers are not aging, they run fine and have no problems. Remember the DDA deadline is 2017 so there is plenty of time to get replacements, everyone seems to think operators need to buy Low Floor buses ASAP because a DDA deadline has been mentioned, but there is a good 5 years left to replace deckers yet! They wil get cheaper over the years too, so might as well wait. Does the DDA include school buses ?

So what about private hire coaches, i mean coaches are still step entrance. Private Hire do not need to comply. Also coaches maybe stepped but are gaining lifts on modern coaches such as Elites, Panther 2's, Levantes etc.... so the market is there and has been for many years.

I said somewhere before that these are staying as they one of the cheapest buses to run and Arriva are sick of the alx 300's as they cost Hecky depot about 10k a month to run even tho they do 7.1 miles to the gallon, one of the best performers in the fleet for feul saving even tho they dont go anywhere. As, ive previously stated i know very little about buses compared to most of you on this forum, but how come the Spectra with its DAF DB250 engine can be so economical compared to the ALX300 which AY run which with the DAF SB220 is intrinsically the same engine, albeit with slightly less horse-power. Sorry I ment 10k in repairs on Hecky ALX 300s and and the spectras dont cost as mutch in repairs but the ALX 300s are good in the feul economy with 7.1 mtg

Think the reason why Arriva Yorkshire got the Step entrance spectras because they were part of a cancelled order from Southend Transport. So arriva snapped them up for the 110.

Arriva were also desperate for new deckers to replace the Volvo Striders on the 110. The Spectras were available at short notice and were snapped up rather than wait a further 12 month for some low floor deckers.

Could this mean the end for the Step Spectras.
Taken from the Arriva Yorkshire Facebook pages:
Debbie Arandall: Any idea why 444 isn't pushchair friendly anymore Arriva Yorkshire: Hi Debbie, this route(444) has not got dedicated vehicles so unfortuantely sometimes there will be buses that are not buggy friendly, however you should see improvements just after Christmas when we will have an investment of some 43 new vehicles into the fleet which will allow us to remove the majority of the unfriendly ones. Thanks
So MOST but why not ALL the (Step Spectras) unfriendly ones are currently sheduled to be removed

I reckon they will keep some but they may dedicate some Gemini's to the 444.

Which step entrance Spectra was on the 268 last night and why? Seen in Heckmondwike around 19:15.
Forget this - just seen the answer on the Misallocations topic.

I am a newbie from outside the WY area but as I am a user of Arriva Merseyside services I "follow the fleet" happenings.
Arriva could transfer the Spectras to their Southern Counties/Shires fleet if they chose to, as there are plenty of elderly dds down there. F/G reg Leyuland Olympians, G reg Volvo Citybuses, the last three N reg Dennis Dominators.
But Arriva never behave logically!

The Spectras are the last choice of buses they would transfer elsewhere.

Another potential home for the Spectras is across the border in Greater Manchester whose ITA has a 15 year age limit. Bolton depot has a number of R reg Volvo Olympians which reach 14 this year. The Spectras could work there until 2013/14.

They'll more likely want to bring in some ex London LF deckers, makes more sense. The step entrance Spectras will prop stay in Yorkshire untill DDA limit.

Even though has been some talk of sending older motors in the English side of the fleet up North and we get the OminLinks, Pulsars etc... back down here!

Having just ridden on 625, think i'm gonna be sorry to see the Step Spectras go if am honest. Always found 'em to be comfortable. But, as they're not very oap/disabled/mum with buggy friendly, they'll probs be 'surplus to requirements' when the new Gemini's hit the road nxt month i guess.
