Rumour that National Express are bidding against First for the Leeds-Airport 757 service Source - www.phpbber.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=81&start=120&mforum=lbaspottersIf its National Express it could well be franchised out. Not sure about the airport network but on the main network every route is now operated by a franchisee (National Express transferred their in house oepration of London-Birmingham to Veolia recently). Not sure on the airport network, have a feeling its part franchised and part run 'in-house' Of course National Express could provide through ticketing to Wakefield, DSA and beyond with the East Coast Rail franchise they have now got

Well as you mean National Express, is that National Express Group or the coaching brand.
Also this service is a LOCAL stage carriage route so therefore cant see coaches been used for the service.
Plus if the route that NatEx won, would they subcontract out to Veolia becuase they may well bid for it them selves or would the route be sub contracted to First, now that would be just daft!

Oh I do hope someone else gets the route. Its not been too bad recently, but in the past I've had some serious problems with the Airport bus been delayed, or buses just dont turn up at all.
When do we find out who has got the contract?

I assume if National Express won the contract they would use their National Express Airport brand
Probably Veolia would be the sub-contractor/franchisee, maybe from York. Do Nat Ex have any others better located in West Yorkshire
Dont see why coaches couldnt be used, theres nothing to stop them being used on local service routes AFAIK. I had a very nice Stagecoach coach a couple of months ago on my service bus home

buses and coaches have their advantagse and disadvantages on this route, im suprised leeds doesn't have a first air coach running direct to the airport because those mornings and afternoons on kirkstall road could leave air passengers pretty late!
first could ship in some coaches for their routes in and around leeds and i couldnt see a problem with it

im suprised leeds doesn't have a first air coach running direct to the airport because those mornings and afternoons on kirkstall road could leave air passengers pretty late! Tell me about it, I get the 757 to college (the Aviation Academy at LBA) Monday to Friday. The 08:00 bus is pretty reliable and is usually ontime, but the 08:30 and 09:00 buses are regulary 15-20mins late and I've been stood at the bus stop over an hour cos the 08:30 ain't turned up at all. Before First Leeds got the contract, didn't the Airport Bus run direct to the Airport?

well when aztecbird had that route it went otley-airport-leeds hourly
the air coach seems a pretty good idea and could connect with areas like castleford and wakefield if possible which could mean more profit.

The only reason they're bidding for it is because they've got the East Coast Mainline franchise.

I think those extensions wouldn't work as they would require Metro subsidy. Well 747 to Bradford is tendered by Metro as well.

The only reason they're bidding for it is because they've got the East Coast Mainline franchise. Both potential operators both will have rail franchises in Leeds, so they could sponsor the service which could decide the winning operator. CT Plus bidded for Leeds FreeCityBus, the only reason First had re-won the contract was because Transpennine Express sponsor the service now.

The current contract with First has been extended for up to a year to allow a widespread review of the Leeds to LBA service with Metro and the LBA's new owners
So there won't be a new operator until mid next year at least!
